Most Disappointing gig ever
A very jaded and slightly sweaty boy sits before the keyboard tonight...
I went to see The Temper Trap tonight, choosing them over The Bronx, Plump DJ's & Friendly Fires AND The Correspondents (all at separate venues). I know the Bronx gig would have kicked ass but I've already seen them and watching The Temper Trap on a tiny stage at Glastonbury on my TV last summer had guaranteed their spectacular live performance. I felt determined to give them the recognition they deserved and translate some of the magical and ancient rhythmns displayed in their music into dance and expression (GAY, whatever). Then someone chose to put 'Sweet Disposition' on 500 days of Summer and a million other things and the show sold out.
So it didn't surprise me when on arrival the average age was extremely high, not bumped up by the odd, older couple; literally half the audience must have been 30+ and a huge number of couples- must be their 'song' or something.
Now I know Temper Trap are not a hardcore act but they touch a nerve with me- Drum Song in particular is like a tribal anthem that live sears through the body
However, when I kicked off at the start off the set, expecting at least a couple to be doing the same I was confronted by the horrible truth that nobody was there to party, in fact the aim seemed to be to not allow the most minimal bead of sweat to form and so I was trapped, I found a couple of people who moved a little more than the others but shame on Cardiff for allowing such a promising show to become anodyne. I guess the moshers are the Bronx.
The performance itself at times hinted at brilliance but without an audience carrying them it felt to me as though the band were running through the motions...
